Sterkfontein Dam, renowned for its crystal-clear waters and abundant yellowfish populations, faces a dire conservation crisis. Over the years, it has transformed from a largely underappreciated trout venue to a top destination for fly fishers, especially known for sight-fishing for smallmouth and largemouth yellowfish. This shift in focus has brought both popularity and challenges, particularly poaching, which has escalated to unsustainable levels, threatening the very existence of this unique fishery.

In response, the Sterkfontein Yellowfish Conservation Group (SYCG) was formed to combat the rising tide of illegal netting activities. Craig Hill, the General Manager of First Group’s very own Qwantani Berg and Trout Resort, has been instrumental in leading the conservation efforts at Sterkfontein together with the SYCG. By early 2022, the SYCG had launched extensive anti-poaching operations, involving round-the-clock patrols, advanced technology like drones, and the strategic use of barriers to restrict access to critical spawning areas. These efforts were initially funded through donations and auctions supported by the fly fishing community and industry stakeholders.

Despite these interventions, poachers adapted by employing tactics like using donkeys to transport illegally netted fish, signifying an ongoing battle that requires constant vigilance and innovation. The conservation efforts have had to evolve, featuring increased security measures and collaboration with local authorities, including police and environmental agencies.

The struggle at Sterkfontein is emblematic of broader environmental and conservation challenges. It underscores the necessity of community engagement, sustained funding, and stringent enforcement to protect not just the yellowfish but the entire ecosystem of the dam. The efforts of Craig Hill and the SYCG, bolstered by community support and technological advancements, illustrate a proactive approach to conservation that other regions might learn from.

As the SYCG continues its vigilant fight against poaching, the future of Sterkfontein’s yellowfish remains uncertain, but the resolve of the conservationists, led by figures like Craig Hill, serves as a beacon of hope. Their message is clear: protecting our natural heritage is not just the responsibility of those on the front lines but of every individual who values the biodiversity and beauty of places like Sterkfontein Dam.
